The Race Card Project
A hope of The Race Card Project at St. Thomas is to encourage dialogue about race. If you find yourself dwelling on a particular Race Card, and you’d like to share your thoughts with us, email RaceCardProject@stapostle.org. If you would be open to and interested in some in-person discussion on thoughts expressed in Race Cards, please email RaceCardProject@stapostle.org and let us know.
Here is a recent post and ‘back story’ from stapostle.org/race-card-project.
I was joking. Was it prejudice?
The other day, I was in conversation with two friends, one of whom is a man of color. We were talking about meeting with a larger group for ‘wings.’ I was warned that the gathering could get loud. In a joking way, I said, “I bet Steve is the loud one,” and implied that my friend of color would be the boisterous life of the party. He laughed it off. As I thought more about it, at the very least, my remark was not in good taste. At its worst, I think it revealed some prejudice. The thing is … Steve is a wonderful man, kind, sensitive, thoughtful, affirming, and I’ve never seen him be unnecessarily loud. I’ve thought back, many times, to my remark and wondered where it came from and what I was thinking. I realized that I have more work to do to root out my own biases and prejudices. God help me!
If you haven’t submitted a Race Card, please join the conversation. If you’ve submitted a Race Card, join the conversation often.
